Monogamy vs. Polygamy: One of the greatest debates in the field of love

According to the official Cambridge Dictionary, the term monogamy refers to “the fact or custom of having a sexual relationship or marriage with only one other person at a time”. On the contrary, polygamy means “the fact or custom of being married to more than one person at the same time”.

As we know, being in a relationship and getting married to only one person is the costume that has predominated the culture in the whole world. Nevertheless, and due to the less and less conservative ideologies that are disseminated, more people are defending the fact of being in a relationship with more than one person, and even getting married.

The YouTube channel Jubilee published a video a few months ago, in which a group of eight people discusses the advantages and disadvantages of practicing polyamory.

But, which of them is the correct practice and way of loving? The truth is that there is not a correct answer to this question. It depends on the culture, the thoughts, the will and the needs of each person. If we take into account that Human Rights defend the idea of liberty and authority of every human being with respect to take their own decisions, there would not be any problem of practicing any of those practices.ç

Many specialists on psychology and relationships mention that the costume of polygamy is much more popular than we think. However, it is still very stigmatized. Not only that it is stigmatized, it is also prohibited by the law in more than half of the countries of the world. Here is a map of countries where polygamy is still legal.

There are different types of polygamy depending on which ratio of genders is included in the marriage. There is polygyny that stands for a community where a man has two or more wives. Cowives are often sisters, but that is not a rule. This lifestyle is widely accepted in parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. A community where a woman has multiple husbands is called polyandry. If her partners are brothers it is called fraternal polyandry.  Polyamory is the practice of having multiple romantic relationships, with all parties being fully aware. In contrary, there is bigamy where one person (the bigamist) have multiple marriages but his/her spouses do not have any knowledge about each other. *This kind of behavior should not be supported*. Group marriage implies marriages with multiple husbands and multiple wives.

It is sad to acknowledge that different types of love are being judged, prohibited and even punished. Did you know that there are penalties for polygamy? According to MyLawQuestions website, fines for polygamy and bigamy in the USA range typically from $500 to $10,000 and prison time range is from 6 months to 9 years.

On this website we do not judge love as long as it is both-sided. We love LOVE!
